Spinout

Rotary heads unite. Despite the economic downturn, or perhaps more precisely because they believe it will soon rebound, Mazda is marching forward in developing its next Mazda RX-7.

The rumor mill has been quite chatty with under-the-radar reports that Mazda is still actively optimizing its rotary engine for the RX-7 comeback. The new plant, dubbed 16X, features two 800cc rotors for a total displacement of 1.6 liters. Power is estimated to be in the 260 to 280 horsepower area. A good deal of attention has been placed on fuel efficiency of the engine and weight reduction in the chassis. We back this plan 100 percent. The RX-8 is too much touring, the scene needs a real powerhouse performance-oriented rotary.
